won't play MOV clips

Postby carolofcatswhiskers » 04 May 2019 18:37

As I am a Windows user, I've posted this in the Windows forum but I fear I may have put it in the wrong one, so apologies if I have erred!

I have a lot of clips downloaded from a shoot which were playing fine on the VLC player until I recently downloaded a VLC update. Now when I play them I get audio but no picture - the only visual is the VLC symbol flashing in the middle of the screen. The clips describe themselves as MOV Video file (VLC). Other edited videos with the same description however are playing fine. I need to access these files to make edit notes to help my editor find his way around the footage. I am not very good with technical language eg terms like "codec", so if you can help me please, could you put it in plain baby idiot's language!

I have checked the forum and can find nothing under "won't play MOV clips".

Hoping to hear from one of you clever technical people.

What is your OS ?
If you're on Windows then try this workaround:
Set VLC to use DXVA2:
Tools -> Preferences -> Video
Output = Direct3D 9
Tools -> Preferences -> Input/Codecs
Hardware accelerated decoding = DXVA 2.0

Then save, exit and restart VLC.

If it doesn't help then open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

And upload a short sample of a problematic file to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to WeTransfer and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
100 MB max should be enough.

Dear Lotesdelere,

You are a genius. Thank you. Your first option worked a treat. All is now working perfectly and I can view my clips. Really grateful. I'm glad I didn't have to use your second suggestion, as I don't really understand that! When I opened Messages the screen was blank. I didn't understand the bit about Verbosity 2 and the rest of the instructions look fearsomely complicated and scary to an untechnical person like me!

No worries though I am back in business. As a matter of interest, was the problem to do with my accepting the update? Did that alter the codec? I only have a vague idea what a codec is but from all the browsing I did on this problem, I suspect a codec was something to do with the issue. By the way you ask me for my OS. Do you mean operating system? It's Windows10.

Anyway, I can now get on with my work. Thank you again.

Carol
