cant see the videos on my tv

I have my laptop conected to my tv, i can play movies with VLC and watch it on my laptop but the image wont come out on my tv. If i play a file on winamp it will come out but its not working with VLC.

try disabling video overlay in the prefs

Some video cards (e.g the ATI I have on my laptop) show the overlay only in one place (either the laptop screen or the VGA output or video out). You can choose which one, but not more than one.

What I'm saying from this point forward is true with the ATI drivers, but I'm jogging my memory, so it's might not be fully accurate:

Go to Display Properties -> Settings Tab
Click on the Advanced button and choose the Displays tab.

You should see all possible displays (probably laptop screen, VGA output and TV out), each in a small box. Within that box there are two blue buttons - one with a circle icon in it (looks a bit like a target), and another with two small windows in it. Make sure you press the circle button where you want to see the video (the overlay will be shown there).

I recommend not turning off the overlay, unless you have a very powerful computer. Overlay really helps at speeding up video rendering.
