DVD conversion - incorrect frame rate

Hi
VLC noob here, trying to perform a seemingly simple task: capture a old home movie off of a DVD.
Problem: the DVD play time is 1:06:25, but the captured video length is 50:04 (a ratio of 0.76). The codec information on the mp4 file shows a framerate of 39.61, where the DVD frame rate is 29.97bps (also ratio of 0.76).
I've been playing with the frame rate settings under convert -> profile -> edit -> video codec to no avail. Any pointers would be appreciated, I've searched but I'm not hitting anything.
Thanks, Roy
