Camera interface code

Hi, VideoLAN is the only software I've found that:

* supports my cheap USB Honestech TVR-25 / Syntek STK1150 pc camera
* includes an executable that successfully runs on my pc, acquires the video signal and displays it correctly
* is open source

But compiling VideoLAN is proving to be a chore. If anyone can suggest another simple Viewer with source code that meets those three criteria, then please point me to it. Softwarewise, all I really need to do is initialize and acquire the camera's USB signal in software with but one kind of camera to worry about. Can I use only the portion of the software that is responsible for that task without great difficulty? Thanks.
