DVD to MP4 Conversion Problems

Hi,

Yesterday, I tried to convert a 30 minute DVD to MP4. After starting, VLC media player showed the message 'Streaming - VLC Media Player' and the play bar played endless loops of 2 minutes 14 seconds. In the end I had to abandon the operation after about 12 hours, by which time the MP4 file was much bigger than the VOB files on the DVD.

Presumably, VLC should display a message like 'Converting' instead of 'Streaming', and from what I've read the operation should take no longer than an hour. I'm guessing too that the resulting MP4 file should not be bigger that the original VOB files.

Can anyone help to resolve this problem?
