playing video, audio loss after repositioning

I have noted this problem for at least the past several years, over several versions, I expect.
I use VLC a lot on Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8) and Linux (Mint/Ubuntu presently), and this problem occurs on all of these deployments, I believe.
I have searched this forum and the internet in general, and I have not found any other reference to the problem.
I may be using search terms which are not chosen well enough to find an existing post.
I can't believe that this problem isn't bothering many people, so I am perplexed to not find any complaints.
It seems to me that I am not abusing the software, that is that what I am doing is not something prohibited.
So here is the problem:
If I play a video, the audio is presented as expected.
If I reposition the pointer to change the playback to a different point in the video - whether or not I have stopped playback -
A good portion of the time, I get normal video playback, but no audio.
I can attempt to recover by again manually repositioning the pointer. Often a slight move forward or backward, will work.
It is as though the repositioning code in the program does not automatically re-sync audio.
I don't think my moving the pointer is or should be prohibited. I think the audio should play again no matter where I point it.
Does anyone have this occur for them? Am I doing something wrong? Does anyone care to comment (or volunteer to help) before I examine the code myself?
