CCTV h.264 with audio

Hi, I hope this is the right section to post in, I have a cheap unbranded CCTV system I was given, it works fine day and night, records with no issues and I can play the .264 files on vlc by changing the demuxer without any real problems, is a little fast and quality is down slightly compared to what I see on the screen for the CCTV. It isn't connected to the net or to the PC so couldn't stream it through vlc or any other software, files have to be manually taken off onto a usb stick, is the way I want it for certain reasons.

I have however just bought a microphone to stick outside on one of the cameras, the box is still recording and I can still watch them on vlc, the file size has increased by at least 40MB on the files for that camera, yet I can't hear anything, there is no playback for the audio, have I missed something stupid? I have searched the net and found nothing I would have deemed new enough to show a similair fault, there are things from 2013 and before easily found but no real solutions as they just point people to the software by one company HIkivision (or something like) to play and hear the audio. I haven't tried it yet as don't know what brand my box is or what model number it is.

Has anyone got a simple fix or have I missed something with the audio codecs?

My codec data (only substantial data there is) through vlc shows
Stream 0
Codec: H.264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (h264)
Type: Video
Video Resolution: 704x576
Buffer dimensions: 704x576
Frame Rate: 25
Decoded Format:
Orientations: Top Left
Chroma Location: Top Left

There is nothing different from most of this on the properties of the file.
