VLC 3.0.3 crashes or freezes after several times frame by frame

I think it's an (very) old bug but I'm still facing the same problem with vlc. After 20 or 30 or 40 times frame by frame, vlc surtenly stops and won't play or goes to the next frame. Only thing helps is to close vlc and start the video again and go to the latest time where I was. Is this a bug or just some setting to avoid this problem?

I have the same issue, and it has occurred with all versions of VLC I have used previously on a Mac. I do not recall this occurring when I used a PC. I'm a novice user, so I don't know which logs to show or how to do that, but I don't think it's an isolated occurrence, even if it's an unusual use case to step so many frames forward by pressing "e". In my case, often the audio continues playing, but the video is frozen on whatever the last frame was indefinitely. Like djpaul78, I have to close VLC and reopen it (sometimes I have to force quite the app). This has occurred not only with a few VLC versions on mac, but on three different laptops (new Macbook Pro 2018, Macbook Pro 2016, and the older Macbook as well) with many/most video files, if that helps with the issue.

Fast forward 21 months, same issue with VLC 3.0.8 on Ubuntu 18.04. The bug is reliably reproducible when frame stepping in the last 3-5 seconds of a video.

Unrelated, if VLC could frame step also in reverse order that would be ideal.

This is fixed now for VLC 4.0. We will see if we can make that work for 3.0.19
