Huge traffic for incoming streams

Hi!

Sorry if my problem was discussed elsewhere, but I have failed to find similar topics on this forum.

Recently I found that VLC player generates a huge traffic when watching video located on a remote server (URL addresses of the form http://domain.name/video.avi were used to set up the streams). For example, for the original file of the approx. size 700Mb the incoming traffic was of the order of 24Gb! The effect was found in the VLC app for Android, as well as in the VLC for Windows. Different URL's were used for the test, as well as different computers in different networks.
Meanwhile, videos from YouTube are streamed as expected, without any extra huge traffic.

Is it normal, or just a bug?

This feels like server that don't support arbitrary seeking.

Thank you for the answer!

The problem is that I observed the problem with different servers. Unfortunately, I do not have my own server to check whether or not the problem is with the arbitrary seeking.
However, I also asked a friend to check VLC. He observed the same effect of huge traffic for VLC, but much less traffic (of the order of 500kb/s) in another player called Mplayer (I have never used this player). Of course, both players were tested using the same file and server.

If possible, could anyone check VLC with the server which is known to support arbitrary seeking?

No, it is not the problem with the arbitrary seeking support... Just downloaded SMPlayer portable and tested the same URL for that original 700MB file. The streaming is normal, approximate speed 6MB/min.

Added: VLC with the same file - approx. 200MB/min.

Use file formats that don't require seeking to play linearly, and teach your users not to seek all the time. VLC is just trying to do what it needs to do.

AVI is the worst choice.

For obtaining the log file presented above, the AVI file was played linearly for several minutes. There was no any seeking from my side. So, if I understand correctly, the problem is with the AVI format itself.

Thank you for the clarification. I thought it was just a bug, but it turns out to be a feature. Meanwhile, such a huge traffic can be dangerous at least for the mobile app users who are unaware of the problem (especially for those using the mobile data). However, even though AVI is the worst choice, at least some of the video players somehow overcome this problem and generate small traffic.

By this time, I have tested several video players, including the Android apps, using the same AVI file on the same remote server. Some players generate huge incoming traffic, some players not (i.e., in the second case the total amount of received data is of the order of the original file size). So, even if the problem is caused by the AVI format itself, it seems that there exist different realizations of the streaming. I can post the results of my testing here or provide it to the VLC developers privately (in order not to make the post looking like a promotion of other programs and apps). Maybe this information will help to avoid the problem of a huge incoming traffic in VLC.
