VLC zooms in when in fullscreen and is stuck in that zoom

I have searched and found many similar problems to mind but none of the remedies have worked. I am running the most recent version of VLC. When I double click the screen to go into full screen, the picture zooms in considerably. Then it is stuck. No shortcuts work. I have tried multiple shortcuts dealing with aspect ratio, zoom, shift zoom and more. No shortcuts work whenever it is zoomed. When I come out of full screen, it unzooms but it is then in windowed mode and not fullscreen. When I get out of fullscreen the shortcuts work again. I would appreciate help and feedback from the community.
