Static parts of the video are going blank

My friend sent me a video from his new iPhone X.
When I play that video in VLC, static sections of the video are blanking out (turning white) every 1-2 seconds.
When I play the same video on my MAC's Quicktime, I initially didn't see this issue. Only after I paid more attention, I noticed white flickering around the edges at the similar intervals. It is so fast in Quicktime, could be easily ignored.
The iPhone X video is 1920 × 1080, HEVC, AAC, Timed Metadata. Possibly shot in 4k (I am not sure how to tell).
Is there anything I can do to improve the playback in VLC?
