Can you stream subtitles?

Greetings,
I couldn't find a simple answer to this question: can you stream subtitles?
I know one way would be to hardcode the subtitles into the video itself, but is it possible to send subtitles over HTTP in sync with the video?
If not, maybe other protocols support subtitle streaming? My requirement is that the stream can be accessed from remote, non-local access point.
