can't run some video files

in general i've had a good experience with vlc.

but there are some video files that will not play. when i open the file, there's no audio or video, and the slider moves across the screen for a few seconds and then the player stops.

when i open the properties window and click the summary tab (btw i have windows xp pro sp2), it says that it's unable to display summary properties. however, in the general tab it does say the file size is 175Mb.

i have talked to other people who say they can play the exact file i'm trying to in vlc, yet for some reason i cannot. i currently have vlc 0.8.2, but i also had the same problem with vlc 0.8.1.

i tried reseting vlc, uninstall/reinstall, deleting vlc directory and reinstalling, but no change. any ideas?

try program AVIcodec to determine codecs
or just have a look at the "stream and media info" dialog in VLC :)

sorry about the delayed response.

i clicked on 'stream and media info' and discovered the following:

for video files that play properly it says something like
stream 0 - codec xvid
type video
resolution 640x368
frame rate 23.976
stream 1 - codec mpga
type audio
channels 2
sample rate 48000 hz
bit rate 131 kb/s

now, for one particular file that DOES NOT play properly (which i know that other people can play in vlc ) it lists 36 separate streams. huh?
some of them are audio streams, and rest are video streams.
for stream 0-3, 6-10, 12-17, 19-21, 26-28, 30-32, 35-36 it says
codec mpga
type audio,
and for the other streams it says
codec mpgv
type video

anyone know what's going on?

Yeah, 36 streams makes no sense at all and your file is probably corrupted in some way.

Try getting a good copy from one of those other people that can play it.
