Adding external subtitles doesn't work with blu rays

I recently acquired a blue ray player and media along with it. I would like to add subtitles I downloaded online like I always have with VLC but seem unable to do so.
When I add subtitles, regardless of whether it's a series or a film, an .ass or .srt file, the timer increases at about four seconds per second but no video or audio is actually playing. It's just a still image of the last frame before inserting the subs. At this point, you'd need to restart VLC to make the blu ray run again.
Checking online, I see indications that this might have to do with it being a blu ray. Just to be on the safe side though, I'd like to know if there is a way to play subs for blu rays. I'd be grateful for any way. Even some obscure workaround. I do not want to decrypt and rip the data though, since that would basically make me owning the blu rays redundant.
