Essential Video Effects do not do anything.

I wanted to adjust the brightness because the darks look blue rather than black, so I went the brightness slider and it did nothing. I enabled every thing, 'Image Adjust', 'Brightness Threshold', it simply does not affect the video (Game of Thrones .mkv). I tried others like 'color' (I think that's one) and 'saturation' but none of it does anything. It's very frustrating, some help would be appreciated.
