Video Cutting / Recording from Very Beginning

Last week I found some tutorials online regarding how to cut a portion out of videos. For the most part, the concept worked great ... at least on 2 videos. On some other videos that I attempted to cut, it is very difficult to start the Recording function in time because the video starts playing immediately upon clicking on Play. Consequently, a little bit of the beginning of the video either gets cut out ... or the audio is recorded, but for a couple of seconds the video is not displaying. The VLC Orange Cone is displayed instead for those first several seconds.
One of the tutorials nonchalantly said --- CLAIMED to click on the Play and Record buttons simultaneously. Upon reading that, I immediately thought, "Uhhh, Excuse Me! WHAT? What do you mean click on the Play and Record buttons simultaneously? This is not an actual physical REAL Recorder. You can't just up and PRESS both the Play and Record buttons together." Or CAN you?
Ssss SO ... what super duper, cool Video Cutting method does someone here have whereby I can be able to record / capture EVERY bit of the original video --- both audio & video at the very beginning of the recording function ... without the VLC Orange Cone temporarily displaying for the several first seconds?
