Subtitles not working on new videos

Hello. I downloaded a video to my computer and tried to see it with the vlc player. On its own, the video worked perfectly. However, when I tried to download subtitles for said video and add them to it the video stops running. Either I apply the same name on both files (video and srt subtitles) or try to add them directly, the player will simply shut the video. I have tried several srt files and it happens with all of them, but only with newer videos (I have downloaded two so far and they both react the same). With older videos it runs perfectly. Does anyone know why this happens? I have the most recent update for Windows installed.
