Playback pauses -- buffer underrun?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Playback pauses -- buffer underrun?

Postby markfilipak » 02 Apr 2017 04:42

Version 2.2.4 Weatherwax. Jean-Baptiste and all the crew: Thank you for making this fine player available!

Playback pauses, usually around the 8-minute mark.
While paused, I hear the disc spin up & seek (indicating that the disc had spun down for some reason).
Playback then resumes and the disc remains spinning, so there are no more interruptions.
Is the disc buffer underrunning? Or not initializing?

Question: Is "Advancd Preferences" dialog > "Input / Codecs" settings (on left) > "Advanced" (on right) > "Disc caching (ms)" the same as buffering?
Usually, a cache is data that's stored to improve reuse whereas buffering is data that's pre-fetched to improve input performance.
I changed it from 300 ms to 1000 ms, but that didn't eliminate pausing.
Note that the 8-minute timing was made with "Disc caching" set to 1000.
I didn't test it when "Disc caching" was set to 300.
Since I was unsure what is meant by "Disc caching", I didn't test further, but I will if requested.

Regards,
Mark.

Update: I just started playing a Blu-ray and the pause happened after 1 minute. So "cache" is not buffer, and I'm mystified.
