Dear VideoLAN users,

The VideoLAN team is happy to announce the second beta version of VLC 0.8.4
(Note: 0.8.3 was skipped because its technical improvements were too little)

Highlights from improvements include:
* Mac OS X interface:
- new dialogs (wizard, extended controls, bookmarks)
- drag and drop in playlist
* wxWidgets interface (default Windows / Linux interface):
- renamed from wxWindows
- VLC update checker (?)
* Skins interface:
- Partial support for tree playlist
* HTTP interface:
- CGI handling, you can now use external programs from VLC's web server
(like PHP for instance)
- Much richer controls
* Linux binary codecs loader. Now able to read WMV3 under Linux.
* UPnP service discovery
* Bonjour (Apple zeroconf protocol) service discovery
* Shoutcast output module to forward streams to icecast servers
* Internal strings handling is now UTF-8 based
* ActiveX plugin should now work outside IE as well
* New script to delete the preferences on OSX automatically
* RTP packet reordering
* enhanced H.264 support
* New languages: Korean, Romanian and Simplified Chinese
* Loads of bug fixes
(https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/query?sta ... .8.4-test2)

You can get a complete list by reading the release notes:
http://developers.videolan.org/vlc/NEWS

This new beta version fixes various bugs reported over the last few weeks.
Most importantly:
* correct saving of certain preferences
* various ffmpeg related fixes (encoding, playback)
* x264 encoding on Win32
* ignored width and height settings of the video-output-windows
* DVD-menus work again on Win32
* deinterlacing crashes
* various other stuff (see link mentioned above)

Binary packages are already available for Windows, BeOS and Mac OS X. You can
download those and the source code as well on:
http://downloads.videolan.org/pub/video ... 8.4-test2/

Remember that this is a beta version. Please test it heavily and report
bugs. Known bugs are registered in the trac database:
http://developers.videolan.org/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/roadmap

nothing plays, no video, no sound

Thanks for the new beta!

Where can I change the Snapshot format from PNG to JPG? When I go to Settings->Preferences->Video->Output Modules->Image Files->Image Format, I only have PNG in my drop down box. The PNG file was successfully created though. The same happened for me in the previous beta1 as well. I have WinXP. Thanks.

Float32 Audio-Output is still enabled in 0.8.4-Test2 by default!

Since this setting causes trouble on many machines, it should either be disabled by default or the user should be able to choose the setting during setup...

Same issue with 0.8.4-test2 win32. No mkv files will play. Avi and MP4 open just fine.

Why 8.4 test2 when issued 8.5?

Why 8.4 test2 when issued 8.5?
0.8.5 is scheduled for the time after 0.8.4. We didn't release anything almost for last half year, so it's time to release something new (various additions and bug-fixes were done).
The nightly builds marked as 0.8.5 show our current unstable progress. Unfortunately, we cannot provide nightlies of our stable branch at the moment. This might follow in the next days, but I won't promise anything.

I have the same problem with mkv files mentioned above. I tried with Divx and mpeg2 inside mkv and they don't work. They didn't work with test1 either. Read viewtopic.php?t=13056&start=0&postdays= ... highlight=

Regression! Test-2 no longer plays the video from the Kodak p850 which is saved as a .mov It just plays the audio.

Bug found in VLC 0.84 test2 (error was also in test1, haven't tried older versions) :shock:

Running Skins2 Interface through the Link in my Startmenu created by installing VLC (C:\Programme\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe --intf skins) everything works fine, but VLC still crashes if i try to use Skins2 as default interface (Error in Page...). :cry:

Skin I tried to use: itunes.vlt
But the Problem is also with the skins2 default skin.

reinstalling vlc and clearing cache, settings didn't helpl me (Same error if i try to use Skins2 as default interface) :!:

I don't see how you can reset the preferences and try with the itunes skin at the same time. Did you do the following exactly?:
- reset the preferences
- exit and restart vlc
- in the preferences, set "Skinnable interface" as the default interface
- save the preferences
- exit and restart vlc

For me it works (tm).

Yes, i've done it like you said but in an other way:

uninstalled vlc (with checkbox clearing settings, cache)
installed vlc (with checkbox delete old settings cache)
and tried to use skinnable interface as the default interface.

subtitle issue

Posted: 07 Nov 2005 11:49
by guilders
Hi there,

this is not a bug, but is incovenient: when having a playing list with several movie files, each owning a subtitle file, you launch the first file enabling its subtitle, when it goes to the second file, than no subtitle is shown, you have to enable it manually, that for each following file.
So it is a real pain watching a subtitled movie of seperate files.

Could the subtitle option be maintained for the "session" instead of for each file ?

Hi,

I have put a test2a binary on the server which fix the mkv problem.
http://ftp.videolan.org/pub/testing/vlc ... -win32.exe

For the mov from the Kodak cam, it claims to be jpeg and so is wrongly treated by VLC as we now have a jpeg decoder.
You can either delete libsdl_images_plugins.dll if you never use vlc to see images or you can force the decoder with

Code: Select all

vlc file.mov :codec=ffmpeg

ive expirenced the following concerning x264 and h264.

i tried to play a h264 encoded movie (with nero digital video datarate 782, 1x5.1aac, 1xstereo aac) with test-4 on my powerbook 1ghz with 10.4.3.

the video window opens, stays black, shows elapsed seconds and theres no video and no sound. if i try to close the video window, nothing happens besides of the the buttons in the controll window start to blink (but this happens a lot)

if i want to watch video again i have to play a simple divx/xvid video and after that x264 also will work again, also playing some x264 videos in a row will work. (see log while playing a x264 after a xvid -> (1) and the log after stopping under (2))

after retriing my video it plays some seconds good but very choppy in comparison to quicktime but at some point the video stops the sound goes on and vlc crashes.

after that i try again the x264 movie and the audio plays fine, however the video freezes at the start and at after a few seconds vlc crashes.

and i could go on with playing a xvid video, playing x264, playing h264-> crash, playing x264->crash, playing xvid, playing x264...

@MuldeR: Either the source serving your stream is way to slow to deliver it or your file is seriously broken. In the first case, an enhancement of the input-buffer in VLC's preferences might help, but I'm not really sure about this. In the latter case, you can't do anything. The timing inside your file is broken and there is no way to recover it correctly.
