High video frame loss @ 720p, NO loss @ 1080p

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

High video frame loss @ 720p, NO loss @ 1080p

Postby Modifyinc » 01 Jan 2017 23:52

I noticed that my home videos created using my JVC HD camcorder at 720p are losing many video frames per second in VLC. In just 10 seconds, 95 video frames were lost!
Yet, the video files from my Galaxy s4 phone, which are at a higher resolution (1080p), don't lose any frames when played back in VLC.

I compared the Codec information available in VLC, and the only real difference I could tell, other than the resolution, is the frame rate.

The JVC @ 720p: frame rate is 59.940059 (Lost 95 video frames in 10 seconds)
The Galaxy s4 phone @ 1080p: frame rate is 29.877019 (No Loss)

Codec on both is H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part10) (avc1) and the Decoder Format is Planar 4:2:0 YUV

PC Specs:
AMD FX-8350 4GHz
16GB DDR3 RAM
Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB
Radeon HD 5500

Any suggestions?

Thank you!
Mike

In the one case, twice as many frames have to be calculated, as in the other case.

Test to disable the options "Drop late frames" and "Skip frames" in the advanced video settings.

Strangely, without changing anything, other than rebooting the PC since the other day, playing the same 720p videos now have no lost video frames whatsoever.

I say strange because the other day, there was nothing running on my system at the time during my initial testing, just as it is now.

If it happens again, I'll just reboot my PC.
