command line options for editing metadata

Good day,
I have researched this in many places but can not find the answer. Is there a way to set the metadata using --meta-description, presumably for comment, and --meta-title from the command line and NOT opening vlc in the process? All I want is to modify the metadata on a batch of mp4 and mkv files.
