Question about file prefix in snapshot.

Hello there,
I've been using VLC for a while but had just found out that I could play with parameters to automatically name the snapshots.
$N seem to give the entire file name including suffix like filename.mp4
Is there a way to just include "filename" and not to include the ".mp4"?
And, is there a way to specify how many leading "0" to go with the sequential numbering?
