Can VLC Media Player 2.1.3 be used to convert .AIFF to MP3?

Search of forum and FAQ turns up nothing. "Convert/Save" menu item exists but insists on saving MP3 files in a variety of bizarre and inappropriate formats like .ts and .wbem, which aren't MP3 files and can't be played.
