Displaying external subtitles with audio only files?

Hi forums!
Here's my situation:
I have a number of MP3s in Japanese. As such, I made multiple ASS/SSA subtitle files (coloured, yay!) for each of them (Japanese Kanji, Japanese Romaji, and English), placing them in the same folder as my music with this name scheme -> [Music file name] - [Rom/Kan/Eng].
Attempting to play the music files in VLC does this:
The embedded album art from the audio files are visible, but VLC appears unable to detect the fact that there are external subtitles that can be played. Attempting to manually add subtitles in proves to be fruitless as well. Subtitle autodetection fuzziness is also turned up to '2' as to maximise detection (interestingly enough, it talks about 'subtitles containing the movie name' - what about audio?).
So given this, here is my question:
How do I make VLC play my music and recognise the fact that they have subtitles as well?
Thank-you for your help!
