English srt comes up as boxes! Help!

I'm trying to get this movie up and running by tonight, but I need the subtitles. I downloaded the srt subtitles from YIFY and for some reason, on the VLC player, they're coming up as boxes. I've tried changing the font, but there's not much I've really tried because I'm at a loss of what to do. What's wrong here?

It's really about the font being used, try another one.
Does it display properly when you open the SRT file with a text editor ? If so then use the same font as the text editor uses.

Also make sure the Default Enconding setting from the Subtitles preferences is set accordingly.
