Capture an image from ONVIF camera

Hello, Have been searching all over and surely the question has been raised and solved before:
. OS = Windows, Linux, MAC
. Application = Parking (car approaches barrier, taps the Access Card which triggers
. Camera is streaming all the time but nothing shall be recorded unless requested
. What is needed: Trigger (that part we know) VLC to take a snapshot or more than one (i.e. Hikvision ONVIF camera DS-2CD2T12-I3 where credentials are admin/12345)
. Taking and storing a movie is not required. Just one or few snapshots
There is an option inside the Hikvision camera to point to VLC but it leads nowhere. So, I am leaning to use RTSP command line under VLC (all OS)
Remarks:
. Webcontrol no longer supported under Chrome 43 up, so that is no use now.
Any help appreciated!
