Blocky playback of VOB files converted from VHS

I'm trying to play a couple of .VOB files that have been created from an old VHS tape. I have no idea what software was used to convert the VHS to .VOB, but have the two files in a VIDEO_TS folder, which VLC seems to be having some trouble playing. Playback is choppy and blocky in places.

If I try to skip forward during playback by clicking ahead on the playback bar, things get worse. The video is slow to react, not playing back from the point I've clicked on, but jumps back some seconds or minutes before the point I've clicked on - if you get me? Playback sometimes freezes, and a couple of times I've just had to force quit VLC to get rid of that spinning beach ball of death. The whole process just seems very jolty and not in any way smooth. Feels like the file needs some smoooooooothing out. A real technical term there?! HA!

My question is - can I tweak some settings within VLC to improve playback, or is this just a matter of the files themselves being poor/corrupt as they're ripped from VHS? Would merging the .VOB files make any difference?

Any info would be greatly appreciated from you VLC gurus!

I'm using VLC 2.2.1 on OSX 10.9.5

Thanks

Use OpenDVD function and open the VIDEO_TS folder.
