Time measures of how long a stream has been played

Hey all,
I'm currently using VLC in a project to stream Internet radio stations. However, I realised today that the progress bar does not move when listening to anything being live-streamed. As part of this project, I'd like to be able to cut off streaming once it reaches a certain time. Is there any way of setting up VLC so that the player registers how long you've been listening to a stream for? In case I haven't made myself totally clear (which I may well not have done!) I'd like:
The 'time' to start at 0:00, as normal
When you start the stream, if you've been listening to the stream for 5 seconds the bar displays 0:05, one minute 1:00 etc. etc.
Anyone know if this is possible?
Many thanks.
