Bookmarks & Playlist Questions -- please help!

Long and short. We have created several video files using a video editing program. The only way to have these files have "chapters" was to burn it to a DVD. This is not an option as we want it in digital format to be able to have long archival properties. There are several clips in a playback file and opposed to breaking out each file, we wanted be be able to have chapters for each section/event that is on the file.

Several people suggested VLC as it has the bookmark feature. We open the file, add in the bookmarks and it all works. As soon as we save the file and put it to a USB and open on another computer the errors start popping up. We want to be able to put these edited movies with the bookmarks added onto a USB for all the family members. I've tried the playlist, but errors there too. The computer we are trying to open on has VLC as well (although a different operating system).

Is there a step by step instruction on how we should be doing this? perhaps we aren't saving this correctly to package on the USB?? Can somebody please help us!? Also, when we save the file as a VLC file with the bookmarks included, what does that do for archive? IE if VLC ever disappears, will you still be able to play back the file with another player or is keeping the raw footage a must?

Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide to us!

If you create bookmarks for your video file, then you can save the playlist with created bookmarks. Select ".m3u" format when saving playlist. Then edit the saved playlist to make the relative path: delete the path, keep only the filename, delete redundand bookmark entries (a bug), save the edited playlist. Keep the video file and playlist file together in one folder. Now you can open the saved playlist in VLC and it will load your video file and it will have your bookmarks available in VLC menu.
