Allow Metadata Network Access

In VLC 2.2.0, if "Allow metadata network access" is checked in preferences, does VLC add metadata to the media file or just show the information while the file is being played? If it does add information to the file, will it add metadata to all media files it finds in your media folders or only files you open in VLC? I would like it to show media information for the file I'm currently playing but don't want it to modify the file, especially files that I've manually added metadata to in programs such as iTunes. In the past I've had issues with Windows Media Player adding and even overwriting metadata on files that I hadn't even opened with that program.

Thanks in advance for any help.

No, VLC does not modify the files.
