Audio issue within HD Transport stream

Postby rapple » 04 Mar 2015 13:29

I'm experiencing two issues with HD transport streams, these are recorded of a Humax Fox T2 and accessed over DLNA. Direct access isn't possible as HD originals are encrypted on this device

The outward symptoms are the same as another poster re. BBC HD (https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... rt#p371870) but I am experiencing this on other channel recordings as well.

Additional info over other post is as follows:

No obvious pattern to which recordings have this but it seems to be more prevalent on BBC for what I record - on average 1in 15-20 seem to experience this.
File plays fine on Humax. Audio missing on programme when played in VLC, either native or streamed or Windows Media player (Win 7 box). Womble VCR or DVD editors refuse to open the file. Initially thought it was the Fox doing something but following suggestions on their forums I tried MPC-HC which was touted as a more "tolerant" player and indeed this could play all the affected files. The assembled knowledge is that the Fox doesn't amend the transport stream per se it merely encodes and decodes it. This would suggest that there is something in the stream itself that is unexpected in terms of the way that VLC processes it.

Like the other poster, switching audio tracks to visually impaired and back again causes the sound to come on. On those from commercial channels, the sound is lost following a return from the ad. break - much as it is on BBC moving from the pre- programme to the actual programme, just multiple times on the commercial channel. So there must be some logic in VLC that handles the situation correctly, maybe mid stream it analyses the audio and recognises it, rather than relying on some initial marker in a stream segment?

I also have one file that VLC refuses to do anything with. VLC remains on screen but it is not clear whether the file remains open or not it just presents a blank screen and doesn't allow any video or audio track selection. Again it plays on the box itself. As this is an episode of one of the series that shows these issues, I suspect it is related but it may not be.

VLC is my go to player and I'd rather avoid having to keep two around but this issue won't allow me to work around it any other way that I can find.

Any suggestions?

Can't see any obvious bugs filed around this, there is one that's probably close (https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/14047), but as a regression bug it can't be the same because this issue exists in 2.2 and has been in all versions for the last 4 months at least (didn't have a source of HD before...).

I would file a bug but as it says give technical detail or it will be marked incomplete and I can see this isn't at the detail level I am describing here I need some assistance to progress this.

Any takers?

So, the issue is that it's AAC channels changing. You should file the bug with the messages that VLC gives.
