Disappearing bookmarks

When I create bookmarks to a certain video and then proceed to transfer that video file to a cloud or an external hard-drive and re-open it up all of my custom bookmarks disappear. Is there any way that I can retain these bookmarks when transferring files between devices? I would greatly appreciate insight on this topic as it is directly pertinent to my work.
