Streaming over the Internet doesn't work (locally it does)

Hello everyone,

I've been struggling with my problem for 2 days and my searches on the Internet haven't been helpful, so I'm hoping this forum can finally help me!

I want to stream a video over the Internet with VLC (I have a 200M/50M connection with fiber optic Internet, so the bandwidth should not be a problem), so my friends can see it.

I've followed different tutorials (they all look like that one : http://www.wikihow.com/Use-VLC-Media-Pl ... r-Computer), and everytime, I'm able to stream the video locally (with my local IP address), but it doesn't work if I try to use my public IP address.

I've tried several ports, and every time, I "opened" them with my router (it's a Livebox, the Orange router I was given by my ISP). This website confirmed that my ports were OK : http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ so I really have no idea why it's not working.

To summarize, the stream works if I open http://192.168.1.10:8080/ but it doesn't with http://mypublicip:8080/
I also tried RTSP streaming: same result : it works locally but not over the Internet.

If someone has a clue of what to do, I'll take it!

Thanks a lot!

In case someone has the same problem one day: the streaming was actually working for everyone but me!

My streaming with my public IP address is indeed accessible from other computers but not from my local network!
It's really strange and it seems to come from my ISP (Orange), since that doesn't happen with my parents' computer (the ISP is Numericable).

Anyway, if you are, like me, trying to test the streaming on your own, well, you can't, you can only use the public IP address from outside your local network!

This is actually a vey common limitation of NAT boxes.
