help with sound problems

Dear all
Please help a new member. I have used VLC for several years now to play downloaded sports games. Recently I have found that the sound is lagging at least 30 seconds behind the action.
I am no techie at all so if someone could come up with a really simple explanation on how to solve this problem please spare me a few moments of your time.
