Stereo Mode option greyed out --- WHY?

I just put a movie into my computer DVD drive, and in VLC Media Player under the Audio options I have "Audio Track" and "Audio Device", but "Stereo Mode" is greyed out. It offers me no options. I only have audio coming out of my left speaker. I put another movie in and I have full features available under "Stereo Mode". Is this a problem with the way the first movie is encoded? It is a commercially produced Collectors Edition of "Midway". If it truly was produced with only the left channel encoded, shouldn't VLC Media Player at least offer me a way to send that channel to both speakers?

Somebody please help.

Thanks!

Because the source audio track is not stereo.

I pretty much assumed that. But why doesn't VLC Media Player give me the option to send the single audio channel to both speakers???

Because that makes sense (mostly) only for stereo sources, and it has never been implemented for anything else.
