VLC loads mkv and hangs, even quit does not help

Hi folks,
VLC loads mkv (City of gods) and stops, even quit does not help, I have to kill the running vlc (stays on after quitting!) via ctrl-alt-del !
I can play the same file with all other players, but use VLC for everything
This file played before so has anything changed in VLC that could cause this.
OTHER MKV FILES PLAY WELL !
Can I force vlc to give me at least a warning or report before hanging up completely ?
I shortly used a videodb writing nfo files to my disk and doing some file renaming (Killed the stupid thing)
Can the cause be the "remember playing settings" vlc not finding its old settings for this film and hanging ?
I am downloading this film again but had the same problem with some other films !
Can someone help me to understand what could cause this ?
