Mono sound from stereo source

Postby MrProsser » 03 Nov 2014 07:42

I am using VLC 2.1.5 in Windows 8.1, to be up front about that in case it matters. I have an mp3 of someone talking during an interview and it has a strange problem. The person was obviously walking around when talking and I get really strange audio effects as he walks around, the sound goes from right to left and back again. Very distracting and annoying. I thought there was an option to play the mp3 in mono, and I saw this wiki page that seemed to indicate this: https://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation ... dio_Device
but when I actually look in Audio Devices I see my TV, my speakers, my headphones, but no mono and stereo option. I can select left or right channel, of course, but I have not listened to the whole interview, and it is quite long, so I worry only using left or right might cause problems at some point. Is there no option to listen to right+left in both the right and left headphone?

Unfortunately, for some reason this very convenient Mono output option was removed a while back (I think about a year ago). The only way to get stereo to mono that I know of is by using the Remap filter (in the prefs):

1. Audio -> Filters: check "Audio channel remapper".
2. Audio -> Filters -> Remap: set Left, Center, and Right to "center".
3. Restart VLC.

The downside to this is that it's not temporary, so if you want to go back to stereo you have to go through these steps every time.
