can we replace the hieroglyphics with actual words?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

can we replace the hieroglyphics with actual words?

For reasons I cannont understand, software seems to like the symbols and pictures instead of good old fashioned drop down choices. I for one, cannot understand the squiggly lines and circles and dots on the buttons where a simple control at the top saying "looping control" or "random control" with checkmarks or something resembling the written word. It would also be great if all controls area available through keystroke commands. so I can automate what I like with keystroke emulators. For example Alt-T will pull up the Tools drop down list, and it would be great if the Alt-T could be followed by a "R" for the "random control" and then a "Y" for yes or a "N" for no. the Alt-T, L will pull up the "looping control" where I can have the commands "C" for current file, "N" for none, or "A" for all. Then I will have a fighting chance of being able to figure out how to control VLC.
