Defaulting to full screen; hot keys not working

I have a second monitor hooked up to a laptop, since the screen on the laptop I use is broken.
For some reason, the latest version of VLC is defaulting to fullscreen mode, and the hot keys do not work, so I cannot stop, pause, or anything. I didn't have this problem with the last version. I updated to the latest version because I kept on having pixelating issues and broken audio from .mp4 files, and while the latest version did fix that problem, it also took away my ability to exit out of the defaulted fullscreen mode and my ability to use hot keys.
In my preferences, hot keys are enabled, and fullscreen is disabled, but I still default to the issues I listed above.
If anyone can help with this, I would be so grateful. Thank you so much.
