Lag while using "capture device"

Hello,
Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong forum (not sure if this problem is Windows specific).
I'm trying to record video and audio in VLC using my on-board webcam/mic (on my laptop).
I'm using "capture device" but I'm experiencing a great deal of lag in live play back and the play back of the recordings (the video and audio skips).
Any help in fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated.
