VLC Questions

Hello, I do not know much about video formats or codecs. Before I download VLC as a media player, I would like to confirm my understanding of some issues/questions that I have about dvd burning, video recording formats, and whether what I am going to do will play in the VLC media player.
I have some video recordings that are in 'mpeg-2 TS video' or with a (.ts) extension. I am planning to burn these files to a dvd, in this format, and I am thinking that I can do this with the Windows Media Player that is on my laptop. If I am successful in burning the video file to a dvd, will the VLC media player play the dvd in the 'mpeg-2 TS' format? If the answer is, you cannot use Windows Media Player to burn the dvd, please inform me how to burn the video file onto a dvd. My intent is to conserve space on my hard drive by burning the video files to a dvd.
Thank you for your help and information, niele.
