Play only the audio stream from YouTube videos

Hi,

It would be really useful if I could stream and play only the audio portion of a video clip without wasting ten times more traffic to listen to a song. Google's API is known to support this, at least on the mobile site. Does someone know more about this regarding VLC? Is it possible to set up VLC play only the audio stream?
