vlc won't play computer made dvds any longer

I suddenly developed a problem playing computer made dvds with VLC. When I put in a DVD, it doesn't seem to recognize it and while the vlc window opens up, nothing happens. VLC will play a commercial DVD, and I can play home made ones with Windows Media Player. VLC also plays video files with no problem. Any thoughts why this might suddenly be happening.
