MOV missing video

I have an MOV file which plays both video & audio normally thru VLC, but about 10mins from the end of the file the video stops - but the audio continues! The VLC playback progress bar stops at its final position (far right), but the time counter continues to increase...
My query is:
1) Is there any way in VLC to find out if there is unplayed video at the end of the file (by comparing video/audio time stamps maybe? Haven't got a clue here to be honest!)
2) Recovering/play missing video from the file
The file was originally recorded via Quicktime on an Intel Mac (currently running Mavericks & VLC 2.1.4)
Any help much appreciated!
