Streaming Multiple channels from 1 tuner card

Postby kake » 26 Aug 2005 10:52

I'm unfamiliar with how this system works and in a attempt to make a complete multimedia home for multiple users i thought that VOD would work quite well if there is a way to stream more than one channel from one tuner card. This because each user should be free to watch whatever he/she should want.

As it is at the moment there is no need for a decoder on the solution our Cable tv provider uses, meaning multiple users can use the same inlet from our provider as long as the signal is splitted to all the tv's involved.

Now here's the tough part. Since I wanted to add HTPC's to each screen, in order to make it a complete multimedia experience i was wondering if there were a way to send all these tv channels through a data link (udp/tcp/http). The reason for doing it like this is because there's a limited amount of space for cables.

However I fear that this isn't possible with this VideoLAN? As I understand it is only able to broadcast/serve one channel at the time from one source? Are there any workarounds, or any tips for making this possible?

The Hauppage NOVA-S card (satellite) can stream an entire transponder of channels. This is known as a "budget" card and has a special setting in the linux version of VLC (possibly others too).

I'm also using a NOVA-T (DVB-T) card to do multiple channels, in a different (Mac) system. The NOVA-T will probably work the same under VLC/v4l.

Also, the VLM module lets one instance of VLC manage multiple concurrent streams.

I'm sad because then I have to stream its flow with vlc and I haven't understand if it's possible.

Please someone can help me?

Thank you in advance
