VLC will play 5.1 on Laptop but not on new Desktop

Hello. I have been using VLC on my laptop connected to my TV and have been able to get 5.1 out of it just fine. I just bought a new PC with much better hardware that I am also connecting to the same TV. Problem is, on the desktop when I go to select 5.1 the option isn't there. I right-click in the video player, but the option to change the audio isn't there. I have gone into the preferences and checked the surround check box. I'm not sure what is different with the VLC on my laptop and this one. The desktop version is 2.12. Is there some setting I need to change? Or maybe something with my computer? How do I change the audio out on the hdmi port if that's the problem? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

I just noticed too that when I transfer a video from laptop to pc with a memory stick, if I play the video file on the PC off of the memory stick, it gives me the option for 5.1. But playing it off the hard drive won't give me that option.

Is there no fix for this?
