how do I convert a file to mp4?

How does one convert/export to mp4 (as in for YouTube?). My VLC player does not have a File pulldown, will not convert files, does not open an open source window, nor offer any convert options that do mp4. Thus none of the multitudes of instructionals that I've read have any relevance to my interface. This is VLC Media Player 2.1.2 Rincewind. Seems like it ought to be simple. thanks.

Thanks Lotesdelere, but my VLC player DOES NOT HAVE A FILE PULLDOWN, thus there is no Wizard to select, and there is no transcode option. My VLC player has the following across the top:

Media Playback Audio Video Subtitle Tools View Help

I did find a "Convert" option under the Media pulldown, which I am experimenting with, and it looks like it might be working (slowly, converts at about 1/3 realtime). The directions on the 'net and at <wiki.videolan.org> don't apply to my VLC player at all. It's as if they were written for some totally different piece of software.

Menu Media -> Convert/Save

Here is the wizard.

Thank you, that did work.

As far as why all the instructionals refer to a non-existant "File" pulldown, I guess that's a question for a different forum (perhaps one on sloppiness?).
