That pesky extra Direct3D window is back in 2.1.0

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

That pesky extra Direct3D window is back in 2.1.0

Postby jagman55 » 07 Nov 2013 11:10

I have VLC on my laptop and desktop.
After lots of cursing and screaming on version, 2.0.7, was able to get rid of that damn little window labeled Direct3D in v2.0.7.
But, had to reload OS due to a bad disk on the laptop.

So today I loaded the new version of VLC 2.1.0.
And, right "out of the box", there is that little window that makes using VLC a pain to use on the first video I tried to play.

I cant remember how I "killed" that damn window so, but noticed some subtle differences in the Preference parameters

ANYONE KNOW HOW to STOP the Direct3D popup window in v2.1.0?

I have to upgrade past 2.0.7 sooner or later. But don't understand why we have to keep dealing with annoyance with ever release,

Reset preferences. Seriously.
...umm, I probably shouldn't respond, but I guess I will anyway.

He already said...
But, had to reload OS due to a bad disk on the laptop.
...don't you think that "reloading the OS" would be the ultimate way of "resetting VLC's prefs"? Why would resetting them "one more time" help? They should already be reset by reloading the OS. I really wouldn't be that surprised if resetting the preferences did fix this problem, I'm just saying that it really shouldn't fix this problem. In fact, according to his report, resetting the prefs should cause this problem. Since he already said he had the problem, fixed it, then "reloaded the OS" & the problem came back, so in effect, "resetting the prefs" caused the problem again...even tho the default prefs say he shouldn't've ever had the problem!

He also said...
And, right "out of the box"...
...that, to me, means that right after he reinstalled Windows (there should be NO remnants of VLC left! -- prefs or otherwise), he installed VLC & had this problem...I can't see how the "old prefs" would survive this...unless he didn't actually "reinstall" the OS (whatever "reload" means).

Maybe the prefs did survive, I don't know exactly how he "reloaded the OS". But wouldn't a better solution be to document what pref needs to be changed to avoid this behavior? I could post my nicely-formatted steps, but I'm not 100% sure of the fix. I'd start with checking "Integrate video in interface" in the prefs. BUT I think that should be the default. I've never had this random "Direct3D window". I can cause one to happen, if I change the prefs, but it's not a "damn window"...it's simply the separate video output window.

jagman55 didn't say if this window had a purpose: does it actually play the video? (if so, it's simply the non-embedded video window, settable via a pref)...or is it a random blank window that does nothing? (if so, I don't know of a fix, I've never had a rouge/useless/"extra" Direct3D window)

jagman55: I'm gonna assume the Direct3D window you wanna get rid of is simply the "normal" video output window, which, for some reason, is not being integrated into VLC's window...
  1. In VLC, click ToolsPreferences
  2. At the bottom left, for Show settings, make sure Simple is selected (it should be)
  3. Along the left, make sure Interface is selected (again, it should be, but I'm just being thorough)
  4. On the right-side, in the section Look & feel (near the top), make sure Use native style is selected (it should be) & check Integrate video in interface
  5. Click Save
  6. Close VLC to commit the pref change (otherwise, if VLC crashes, this change {or some changes} might not be saved)
  7. Run VLC & see if that fixes the problem
...if that was already checked, or didn't fix your problem, please be more specific about this window: does it do anything? where does the video play? does it show up when you are NOT playing a video?...perhaps a screenshot?

Right now, the only other pref I can think of to change is the video output method...
  1. In VLC, click ToolsPreferences
  2. At the bottom left, for Show settings, make sure Simple is selected (it should be)
  3. Along the left, click Video
  4. On the right-side, in the section Display (near the top), for Output...
    • 1st of all, write down what is ALREADY set (is it on "Default"?) & post that in a msg on the forum
    • Change the value to something else, try DirectX or Direct3D or OpenGL
      • Notes...
        • Since you already have the "Direct3D" window that's annoying you, that might be what it's already defaulting to...but it could still be worth trying.
        • You must finish these steps each time you try a different setting (including saving & closing VLC, below).
  5. Click Save
  6. Close VLC to commit the pref change (otherwise, if VLC crashes, this change {or some changes} might not be saved)
  7. Run VLC & see if that fixes the problem

Sigh, the above can't be a link: "You cannot use certain BBCodes: [url]."...so, I can't even link back to a post on this forum?
How about this: can long-term/trusted users be allowed links in sigs?

Seriously, the splitted windows is if you extract the video from the interface, in preferences.

HEY GUYS

So I just had the same problem as Jagman, and I followed the same steps. A few things:

1. I do have videogames open half the time, perhaps that has something to do with it?

2. I have noticed the same thing as jagman (doing it only 50% of the time or whatever) and I have noticed a pattern. Basically, if I have a playlist of playable items (in this case .mp4), and press play all in windows explorer just in the file folder, it does the split window. However, if I stop the video and clear the playlist in VLC, then drag and drop the items into the playlist from the folder (instead of using the "play" button in windows 7), then press play INSIDE of vlc, it works no problem.

Not sure if it helps at all.

Thanks!! :)

edit: picture for clarification. http://imgur.com/TfIiPZb . I was using the little play button with the traffic cone, up near "organize".

Also, wanted to clarify: I did check all of the steps posted by jslover. I did not change anything. Everything he said to make sure was checked, already was so by default (at least for me).
