VLC and DVD regions

Hi. In Jaguar, i was able to play any region dvd in VLC 0.62. (Yay! Nice one... etc..) But unfortunately, i can't now do that in Panther; i get an 'access denied - cannot peek' error message.

Is this to do with VLC, or is it to do with the fact that i hadn't previously 'set' the region on my Superdrive? I wasn't even going to bother doing so, but one of the dvds that i put in there set my region for me without asking! I'm now set on region 2.

Just tried the beta of 0.7, and no joy there either. :-(

Any offers?

It's quite possible that this is the reason. liddvdcss the code we use for this, is known to have some problems with the way the region setting works on some of the models of drives that ship in Macs.

same problem in jaguar!

I have the same problem already in Jaguar: I'm Running version 10.2.8 on a TiBook 667 (2nd rev). My combo drive is set to region 2, and i am trying to open a region 1 dvd but it doesn't work - when i choose the option "open disc" or "open video ts folder" it does not play anything, and if i choose a single file from inside the video ts folder, it gives me the "cannot peek"-error message. is there any help? i want to show a dvd in a seminar tomorrow at 12.00, so it's kind of urgent...

Well, there are firmware hacks out there that can re-set your drive to multi-region, but this will of course invalidate any warranty you have, so that should be a last resort. Have a look here

http://www.wormintheapple.gr/macdvd/download2.html

but proceed with caution!! I haven't tried this yet, so i can't say whether it is easy or whatever.......

You can change the region on your drive 5 times by default, so if you have 2 changes left, you could change to R1 for your seminar, and then back again afterwards. (Okay that's no use if you want to show several different DVDs, but it's just a thought....)

nah just one change left but thanks for the hint with the firmware hack... although i'm not sure if i'll give it a try... it's good to know. the seminar can also do without the one dvd.
