Newbie needs help with playback from laptop to TV

Hi All
Just downloaded VLC player for the first time as need to have subtitles and this player seems to be best at supporting them.
Anyway, hooked the laptop to the TV yesterday to watch a movie and the sound via the TV is broken and sounds a like its sped up. Playing the same movie just through the laptop is fine however.
Am using a HDMI cable.
Any ideas on what I need to do to stop this happening? Everything else played fine, video, subtitles etc.
Your help would be appreciated.
